14 Ways to Take Care of YOU in the NICU
1.) Take it day by day - the NICU is truly a roller coaster.
You will have highs and lows, good days and bad, so try to take it all in stride. When you feel overwhelmed, just breathe. There is always hope!
2.) Keep a journal.
Track your baby's progress, weight, victories, challenges, questions, notes from doctors and nurses, eating, pumping, and anything else you think you'll want to remember now or later. The NICU can be a whirlwind, and without a journal, some moments will become fuzzy that you wish were a little more clear.
3.) Remember your NICU care team becomes an extended part of your family.
Get to know them as they take care of your little fighter.
4.) I know it's hard, but try to take a break from the hospital from time to time.
As much as you want to be there with your baby, you also need to take care of YOU! A mentally, physically, and emotionally healthy you is the best version of yourself to give your baby all the love and care they need. And, remember, while you are gone, you've got an amazing team of staff who will care for and love on your baby in your absence!
5.) Give yourself grace!
Try not to beat yourself up. Remember your NICU stay is not your fault. You are not guilty, and everything is working together for good!
6.) Venture out to meet other NICU families.
You all are going through many of the same challenges, and, while others may not understand, your shared testimonies will strengthen each other for the long days.
7.) Ask as many questions as you'd like!
Don't be afraid to ask your baby's doctors, nurses, and other care team members any and all questions. They are there for you and your baby, and they are happy to address your questions and concerns. The more you know, the more well informed decisions you can make, and the more confident and connected you will feel in the journey.
8.) Celebrate small victories.
In the NICU, every ounce gained, every tube removed, and every milestone met is worth celebrating. These little moments of progress can provide a much-needed boost to your spirit and remind you that your baby is growing stronger day by day.
9.) Take photos and create keepsakes.
Capture the journey with photos and mementos. Even though this time is hard, it’s a unique part of your story. Create a NICU memory book or use milestone cards to document your baby’s progress and achievements.
10.) Lean on your support system.
Reach out to family, friends, or faith-based communities for encouragement and help. Whether it’s someone bringing meals, providing rides, or simply listening, your support system can lighten your load.
11.) Practice self-compassion.
It’s natural to feel a range of emotions, including sadness, frustration, or guilt. Allow yourself to feel those emotions without judgment. Remind yourself that you’re doing your best for your baby in an incredibly challenging situation. If they need help understanding your journey or ways to support you, share these helpful tips with them.
12.) Trust the process.
The NICU journey can feel unpredictable, but trust the care team and trust yourself. You are an amazing parent for showing up every day for your baby, whether in person or in spirit.
13.) Find a way to decompress.
Discover activities that help you unwind, whether it’s reading, meditating, listening to music, or a quick walk outside. Even small moments of self-care can have a big impact on your mental health.
14.) Don’t hesitate to ask for help.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed emotionally, physically, or mentally, consider reaching out to a counselor, support group, or spiritual advisor. NICU parenting can be isolating, but you’re not alone, and seeking help is a sign of strength.
